Owa odrębność najwyraźniej zaznaczała się w doborze repertuaru zawartego w sporządzanych na tych terenach rękopisach, ale też w stosowanych tutaj technikach kompozytorskich, preferowanych formach i wielu innych detalach. Specyficzny charakter tej kultury miał swoją kontynuację także później, pod władaniem Habsburgów w Czechach i na Węgrzech oraz Wazów w Polsce i Litwie. Środkowoeuropejska kultura muzyczna nie rozwijała się oczywiście w izolacji od głównych nurtów europejskich, a pozostawała z nimi w ścisłym związku m.in. dzięki ekonomicznie lub politycznie uwarunkowanym migracjom muzyków. Czasy Jagiellonów w różnoraki sposób odcisnęły swoje piętno także na muzyce europejskiej następnych stuleci.
        Ten krąg zagadnień był przedmiotem konferencji The musical heritage of the Jagiellonian era in Central and Eastern European countries (Warszawa, 25–29 sierpnia 2009 r.) zorganizowanej przez Bibliotekę Narodową we współpracy z Instytutem Sztuki Polskiej Akademii Nauk i Instytutem Muzykologii Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Artykuły zawarte w niniejszym tomie stanowią po części pokłosie konferencji, a po części powstały niezależnie od niej.

        Rulers from the Jagiellonian dynasty occupied the thrones of Poland, Lithuania, Bohemia and Hungary for almost two centuries (1386–1572), and their reign witnessed the birth, and the early stages of development, of musical culture in the broadly defined region of Central Europe. The character of this musical culture was differentiated internally, but was, at the same time, somewhat different as a whole from the musical culture of Western Europe. This distinctiveness is most clearly apparent in the selection of the musical repertory contained in the sources created in this region, but can also be seen in the compositional techniques used there, in the preferred forms, and in many other details. The individual character of this culture was also maintained later on, under the rule of the Habsburgs in the Czech lands and Hungary, and under the Vasas in Poland and Lithuania. Clearly, the musical culture of Central Europe did not develop in isolation from the main European trends, but remained closely associated with them for a number of reasons, including the economically or politically motivated migrations of musicians. We can also discern various ways in which the Jagiellonian period left its mark on European music in the centuries which followed.
        These issues were the subject of a conference under the title The musical heritage of the Jagiellonian era in Central and Eastern European countries (Warsaw, 25–29 August 2009) organised by the National Library in collaboration with the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Musicology of the University of Warsaw. The articles in this volume represent, in part, the harvest from the conference, and, in part, contributions made independently of it.
