Theatre research has been conducted in various institutional forms since the end of the war. In 1953, the Director of the National Institute of Art, Prof. Juliusz Starzyński, defined the institute’s organisational structure and established the Theatre Section, comprising departments and workshops led by Leon Schiller. In 1955, the Theatre Section was renamed the Department of the History and Theory of Theatre. During its’ fifty-odd year history, the Department has undergone many organisational changes. The current structure has been in place since 2000.
Academic research and publication and documentation work have been carried out in the following units: the History of Theatre Section, “Pamiętnik Teatralny” [Theatre Journal], Słownik Biograficzny Teatru Polskiego [the Biographical Dictionary of Polish Theatre], “Almanach Sceny Polskiej i Rzeczy Teatralne” [the Almanac of the Polish Stage and Theatrical Topics]. In addition, some other works by researchers employed in the Section include: teaching activities in higher education institutes (the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University), cooperation with periodicals (“Dialog”, “Teatr”), organisation of and participation in academic conferences, cooperation with academic centres and cultural organisations in Poland and abroad (long-term cooperation with Federation International Pour La Recherche Theatrale FIRT/IFTR and UNIMA, as well as with researchers mainly from the Czech Republic, France, Lithuania, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, USA and Hungary), the publication of "Errata", and the development of scenarios for theatrical exhibitions.
